Desert kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti) construct burrows that can create micro-niches favorable to increased microbial activity. The aim of this study was to characterize the bacterial communities found in kangaroo rat burrows, in proximal desert surface sand, and in samples from kangaroo rats. We collected samples from burrow ceilings of actively inhabited burrows, from burrows that were no longer in use, and from the proximal surface sand in the Sonoran Desert, Yuma, AZ. Following DNA extraction from samples, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed, and functional predictions were made and assessed for each characterized bacterial community. Active burrow samples exhibited greater alpha diversity but similar beta diversity when compared to surface sand (P < 0.05), with no significant differences observed between abandoned and active burrows. Bacterial genera and genes related to nitrogen fixation, nitrification, and urea hydrolysis were found in significantly higher abundance in active burrows compared to the surface sand (P < 0.05). The core microbiome of active burrow samples was different from surface sand, including higher abundances of Acidimicrobiales and Acidobacteria subdivision Gp7. Active burrow samples included 30 unique genera. Kangaroo rat anal swabs shared 12, cheek pouches shared 6 unique genera with burrows. These findings suggest that kangaroo rats can shape the microbial composition of their burrow environment through the introduction of food material and waste, facilitating increased species richness and bacterial diversity.IMPORTANCEAnimals can alter soil parameters, including microbial composition through burrowing activities, excretion, and dietary composition. Desert kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti) construct burrows within loose desert sand that have microclimatic conditions different from the surrounding desert climate. In this study, we explored the effect of disturbance from kangaroo rat activities on the bacterial composition of sand. We compared the bacterial community compositions of kangaroo rat (D. deserti) samples, their burrows, and the proximal surface sand. The results showed that burrow sand shows higher richness and diversity of bacterial community with higher abundances of bacterial genera and genes associated with nitrogen fixation, nitrification, and urea hydrolysis compared to the surface sand. These findings suggest that kangaroo rats affect the microbial composition of their burrow environment through the introduction of food material and waste.

Kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti) construct complex burrow systems in loose desert sand that survive temperature and relative humidity fluctuations and storms. Animals that burrow in desert sand typically burrow in compacted sand, near plant roots, or when the soil is unsaturated. However, these processes are insufficient to explain tunnel stability of kangaroo rats. Our goal is to understand how kangaroo rat burrows remain stable in loose desert sand, intending to translate this knowledge to geotechnical engineering. A kangaroo rat habitat in the dunes of The Sonoran Desert, AZ, was selected for the study. Dynamic cone penetrometer tests performed at active, abandoned, and no-burrow sites demonstrated that the animals prefer loose sand for burrow construction. Soil samples collected from the burrows' ceilings, subsurface, and surface were characterized. Brazilian tensile strength test results showed that burrow soil has approximately 3 times greater tensile strength than the rest at dry state, which indicates increased interparticle attractive stress in burrow ceilings due to biocementation. Laboratory experiments, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal microscopy images showed that fungal and microbial biofilms provided 17 kPa increase in interparticle attractive stress at less than 1% biomass concentration, indicating potential to be used in soil improvement applications.

Understanding how diverse locomotor repertoires evolved in anthropoid primates is key to reconstructing the clade's evolution. Locomotor behaviour is often inferred from proximal femur morphology, yet the relationship of femoral variation to locomotor diversity is poorly understood. Extant acrobatic primates have greater ranges of hip joint mobility—particularly abduction—than those using more stereotyped locomotion, but how bony morphologies of the femur and pelvis interact to produce different locomotor abilities is unknown. We conducted hypothesis-driven path analyses via regularized structural equation modelling (SEM) to determine which morphological traits are the strongest predictors of hip abduction in anthropoid primates. Seven femoral morphological traits and two hip abduction measures were obtained from 25 primate species, split into broad locomotor and taxonomic groups. Through variable selection and fit testing techniques, insignificant predictors were removed to create the most parsimonious final models. Some morphological predictors, such as femur shaft length and neck-shaft angle, were important across models. Different trait combinations best predicted hip abduction by locomotor or taxonomic group, demonstrating group-specific linkages among morphology, mobility and behaviour. Our study illustrates the strength of SEM for identifying biologically important relationships between morphology and performance, which will have future applications for palaeobiological and biomechanical studies.

A broad diversity of biological organisms and systems interact with soil in ways that facilitate their growth and survival. These interactions are made possible by strategies that enable organisms to accomplish functions that can be analogous to those required in geotechnical engineering systems. Examples include anchorage in soft and weak ground, penetration into hard and stiff subsurface materials and movement in loose sand. Since the biological strategies have been “vetted” by the process of natural selection, and the functions they accomplish are governed by the same physical laws in both the natural and engineered environments, they represent a unique source of principles and design ideas for addressing geotechnical challenges. However, prior to implementation as engineering solutions, the differences in spatial and temporal scales and material properties between the biological environment and engineered system must be addressed. Bio-inspired geotechnics research is addressing topics such as soil excavation and penetration, soil–structure interface shearing, load transfer between foundation and anchorage elements and soils, and mass and thermal transport, having gained inspiration from organisms such as worms, clams, ants, termites, fishes, snakes and plant roots. This work highlights the potential benefits to both geotechnical engineering through new or improved solutions and biology through understanding of mechanisms as a result of cross-disciplinary interactions and collaborations. Bipedal hopping is a specialized mode of locomotion that has arisen independently in at least five groups of mammals. We review the evolutionary origins of these groups, examine three of the most prominent hypotheses for why bipedal hopping may have arisen, and discuss how this unique mode of locomotion influences the behavior and ecology of modern species. While all bipedal hoppers share generally similar body plans, differences in underlying musculoskeletal anatomy influence what performance benefits each group may derive from this mode of locomotion. Based on a review of the literature, we conclude that the most likely reason that bipedal hopping evolved is associated with predator avoidance by relatively small species in forested environments. Yet, the morphological specializations associated with this mode of locomotion have facilitated the secondary acquisition of performance characteristics that enable these species to be highly successful in ecologically demanding environments such as deserts. We refute many long-held misunderstandings about the origins of bipedal hopping and identify potential areas of research that would advance the understanding of this mode of locomotion.

Locomotion inextricably links biomechanics to ecology as animals maneuver through mechanically challenging environments. Faster individuals are more likely to escape predators, surviving to produce more offspring. Fast sprint speed evolved several times in lizards, including geckos. However, the underlying mechanisms determining performance await discovery in many clades. Novel morphological structures influence these mechanisms by adding complexity to the government of locomotion. Gecko adhesion coevolves with modified muscles, tendons, and reflexes. We explored how the Namib Day Gecko, Rhoptropus afer , sprints on ecologically relevant substrates. Locomotion requires that many moving parts of the animal work together; we found knee and ankle extension are the principal drivers of speed on a level surface while contributions to sprinting uphill are more evenly distributed among motions of the femur, knee, and ankle. Although geckos are thought to propel themselves with specialized, proximally located muscles that retract and rotate the femur, we show with path analysis that locomotion is altered in this secondarily terrestrial gecko. We present evidence of intraspecific variation in the use of adhesive toe pads and suggest that the subdigital adhesive toe pad may increase sprint speed in this species. We argue kinematics coevolve with the secondarily terrestrial lifestyle of this species.

Predation plays a central role in the lives of most organisms. Predators must find and subdue prey to survive and reproduce, whereas prey must avoid predators to do the same. The resultant antagonistic coevolution often leads to extreme adaptations in both parties. Few examples capture the imagination like a rapid strike from a venomous snake. However, almost nothing is known about strike performance of viperid snakes under natural conditions. We obtained high-speed (500 fps) three-dimensional video in the field (at night using infrared lights) of Mohave rattlesnakes ( Crotalus scutulatus ) attempting to capture Merriam’s kangaroo rats ( Dipodomys merriami ). Strikes occurred from a range of distances (4.6 to 20.6 cm), and rattlesnake performance was highly variable. Missed capture attempts resulted from both rapid escape maneuvers and poor strike accuracy. Maximum velocity and acceleration of some rattlesnake strikes fell within the range of reported laboratory values, but some far exceeded most observations. Thus, quantifying rapid predator-prey interactions in the wild will propel our understanding of animal performance.

Innovations permit the diversification of lineages, but they may also impose functional constraints on behaviors such as locomotion. Thus, it is not surprising that secondary simplification of novel locomotory traits has occurred several times among vertebrates and could potentially lead to exceptional divergence when constraints are relaxed. For example, the gecko adhesive system is a remarkable innovation that permits locomotion on surfaces unavailable to other animals, but has been lost or simplified in species that have reverted to a terrestrial lifestyle. We examined the functional and morphological consequences of this adaptive simplification in the Pachydactylus radiation of geckos, which exhibits multiple unambiguous losses or bouts of simplification of the adhesive system. We found that the rates of morphological and 3D locomotor kinematic evolution are elevated in those species that have simplified or lost adhesive capabilities. This finding suggests that the constraints associated with adhesion have been circumvented, permitting these species to either run faster or burrow. The association between a terrestrial lifestyle and the loss/reduction of adhesion suggests a direct link between morphology, biomechanics, and ecology.

Effectively moving across variable substrates is important to all terrestrial animals. The effects of substrates on lizard performance have ecological ramifications including the partitioning of habitat according to sprinting ability on different surfaces. This phenomenon is known as sprint sensitivity, or the decrease in sprint speed due to change in substrate. However, sprint sensitivity has been characterized only in arboreal Anolis lizards. Our study measured sensitivity to substrate rugosity among six lizard species that occupy rocky, sandy, and/or arboreal habitats. Lizards that use rocky habitats are less sensitive to changes in substrate rugosity, followed by arboreal lizards, and then by lizards that use sandy habitats. We infer from comparative phylogenetic analysis that forelimb, chest, and tail dimensions are important external morphological features related to sensitivity to changes in substrate rugosity.
