Professor of Communication Studies at California State University, Sacramento, and at the Instituto de Investigaciones Filológicas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. His research and creative practice explore hypermedia storytelling, artificial intelligence, AI literacy for higher education, open educational resources, computer‑mediated communication, online learning, and immersive virtual environments. Bonilla is best known for modular cinema and multilingual digital poetics, studying algorithmic and participatory forms in film and virtual reality. His works—such as *Pitched Together* (2024), *Scholarly Stanzas* (2023), *Uku Pacha* (2021), and *Big Data* (2019–2021)—have been recognized at international film festivals, museums, and competitions. Bonilla co‑edited *Tablada Hipertextual* (2020) and authored *Making Sense of Tracking Data* (2008) and *Mercadotecnia e Imagen en Internet* (1996). He received the Graduate School Doctoral Prize at Syracuse University and leads initiatives in open educational resources and AI‑driven pedagogy. He earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communications and his M.S. in Media Management from Syracuse University and his B.A. in Business Administration from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México.
