Abstract
From a consideration of these issues and this summary author's experiences, the following are critical areas that school psychologists should consider. * School psychologists should be aware of the most recent changes to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as it pertains to release of student information when an emergency affecting the student's safety or the safety of others is in question (pp. 485-486). * School psychologists have a vital role on school threat assessment teams, helping determine a student's needs for intervention (pp. 486-487). * School psychologists should be aware of the delicate balance between advocating for students with mental illness and maintaining safety for the individual and others.
