Abstract
In this article, the author outlines Muxerista Portraiture, an epistemological and methodological approach for qualitative research. In the spirit of portraiture and Chicana feminisms, the author begins by sharing her mother’s story to illustrate how it inspired her to study Chicana mother-daughter pedagogies and encouraged her to create nueva teoría. She then traces the relationship between portraiture and Chicana feminist theories to show where they connect and diverge. Using her cultural intuition, she argues for the collaboration of portraiture and Chicana feminist theories in qualitative research. In an effort to build a case for Muxerista Portraiture, she explains the five elements of portraiture (context, voice, relationships, emergent themes, and aesthetic whole) in a way that engages and is informed by Chicana feminist theories.
