Abstract
This article attempts to place discussions of how individuals with disabilities are viewed in society by examining the issue of disabilities through a broader lens. sociologists have a long tradition of studying individuals and groups who are viewed as “different” from desirable social norms, such as racial minorities and women. alternative definitions and theories dealing with difference shed light on how people or groups who are so defined become accepted or marginalized. current theories, particularly those dealing with democratic community, provide a means of rethinking how we can maintain the positive aspects of acceptance of difference with the increasing urgency of creating strong communities inclusive of all members of society.
