Abstract
The field of disabilities studies is expanding rapidity, creating a challenge for school nurses, educators, and other professionals who are trying to provide the most up-to-date care for their students and families. Professionals involved with the care of children are presented with new ideas and new research about treatments, educational standards, and full inclusion for children with disabilities. In addition the concepts and meaning of the word "disability" has evolved resulting in a paradigm shift away from a medical model for disability toward a more social understanding. The World Health Organization's Convention of the Person with Disabilities (2008) states that disability arises from the interaction between people with a health condition and their environment. The WHO further states that society should act to remove environmental, educational, and social barriers which prevent full inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.
