Abstract
AbstractThe axial compressive strength of flange-damaged steel columns is studied using an equilibrium-based analytical approach. Compared to a related investigation that employed a variational technique, the presented model shows similar trends regarding severely reduced axial compressive strength associated with local flange damage. An empirical equation based on a parametric study performed using the developed technique is proposed as a tool that can be used by practicing engineers to determine a quick and reasonable approximation of the capacity of locally flange-damaged steel columns. The developed equation is validated using detailed finite-element analysis.
