Abstract
Textbooks used during the 1974/75 academic year, in Calif & other states, are content analyzed to determine their image of Arabs. The nomadic elements in Arab society are strongly overemphasized relative to their importance as part of the population. Islam is generally represented fairly, but is too strongly associated with the idea of holy war & with inferior status for females & slaves. Virtually all textbooks encourage a pro-Israel attitude toward the Middle Eastern conflicts now occurring. Thus, efforts are needed to present a more accurate image of Arabs & the Near East. 1 Table.
