Abstract
An abstract of a study by Sharpp describing and analyzing how resident assistants (RAs) provide care for elders with dementia living in assisted living facilities (ALFs) is presented. Results show that most RAs were immigrants and came to the facility with zero language and zero skill, according to the owner. Formal training did not account for any of their knowledge regarding the care for the older adult with dementia. She concludes that the majority of care to elders in ALFs is provided by unlicensed, uneducated RAs. Gerontological nurses understand the unique care needs of elderly residents and can provide important education to RAs in ALFs.
