In chapter one, Condry discusses the racial aspect of hip-hop and what it means to appropriate a predominately African American art form dealing with American race relations into Japan. Chapter five reveals how rappers have sculpted and manipulated the Japanese language through accented, rhyming lyrics that bring into play English-language poetics to create the distinctive poetics of Japanese hip-hop.
