Abstract

History Natural gas
Castaneda traces the evolution of the California manufactured and natural gas industry. Manufactured gas, a flammable gas produced by heating coal, was used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for lighting and heating. Natural gas discoveries in California and the construction of gas pipelines from gas fields in California to urban areas precipitated a transition from manufactured to natural gas in California.
