Abstract
This article describes curricular changes recently implemented in the four-semester series of music history courses offered by the School of Music at California State University, Sacramento. The overarching goal of these changes was to create a capstone, writing-intensive research course within an existing requirement for the major that would offer a rigorous research experience to each of our students and support the university's core values of diversity and inclusion. Preparation for the new research course includes a scaffolded sequence of reading and writing skills embedded in a three-semester survey of music history and literature. I discuss the development and implementation of our restructured curriculum, our launch of an annual School of Music Research Symposium and Research Awards, our work with university administrators and the support we have received from them, the obstacles we worked through and continue to address, and the student outcomes we have gathered and assessed thus far.
