Abstract

Although Pollack and Norman's A' is used widely as a nonparametric measure of sensitivity or discrimination accuracy for a single ROC point, the assumptions on which it is based and its meaning generally are misunderstood. The origins of A' are reviewed to clarify just what A' is and what it is not. A new measure, A", is described that actually has the meaning generally ascribed to A'.
