Abstract
Volcanoes are scientifically intriguing, esthetically pleasing, and exciting to us all. They are also valuable educational tools in the Earth sciences. To capture the art, science, and excitement of volcanoes, the Volcanological Society of Sacramento, VSSAC, published its first photographic wall calendar in 1992. Volcano calendars were published in 28 of the 30 years from 1992 to 2021. The 1992 and 1993 issues of the calendar were 8.5 × 11 inches in size and contained black-and-white photographs. In 1995, the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) sponsored VSSAC, and the calendar became a joint publication of both organizations. Since 1995, the calendar has been printed with color photographs. In 1999, the calendar was increased in size to 12 × 12 inches when Brown Trout Publishers took over the printing and marketing of the calendar. An educational feature of the calendar is the listing of several hundred VEI ≥ 4 eruptions on the days that they occurred. Photos used in the calendar have been generously donated by volcanologists from many countries, and thus, the calendar has been a true international effort. Through the years, we have published volcano photographs from 217 photographers. There have been 170 volcanoes featured. The calendar was discontinued by Brown Trout during the COVID 19 pandemic. Old copies continue to be used by the community as sources of photos and basic information.
