Abstract
For the transgender community that is underserved as well as a having limited knowledge in our society, social workers can be a tremendous benefit that helps empower their communities and help improve their quality life. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding safety issues to the high mortality rates in the transgender community. This qualitative content analysis study examines, from the perspective of members from the transgender community the roles of social workers in the lives of transgender people. After interviewing ten participants, the following three themes emerged: (1) the need for knowledgeable social workers regarding the concerns of transgender people and the resources available; (2) advocating for policies to ensure safety and equal rights in the United States; and (3) providing support for the individual person and being open minded and willing to support in the capacity of the service provided by the social worker. Implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.
