Abstract
This study examines the perceptions of child welfare workers in Sonoma County regarding service availability and delivery to Mexican undocumented children and families who are involved with the child welfare system. This study is an exploratory study that is both qualitative and quantitative. The researcher developed an on-line survey, which she sent to 89 child welfare workers, including social workers and managers. The questions included themes such as available services and resources, barriers, and service delivery. The researcher also attempted to complete secondary data analysis of closed CPS cases. The findings suggest that the child welfare workers in Sonoma County are aware of the challenges that Mexican undocumented families face when involved in the child welfare system. The findings also imply a discrepancy between the desire social workers have _to help Mexican undocumented children and families and the services and resources that are available for this population. The study has implications for social work practice with Mexican undocumented children and families. This includes the need for social workers and other service providers to develop informal services to help Mexican undocumented children and families to be more successful when involved with the child welfare system.
