Abstract
As children with moderate to extensive disabilities work towards finishing high school, or a program for students aged 18-21, the next steps to post-school life can be challenging to determine. Many parents or guardians do not know the options for employment, continuing education, or supported living. Many educators of these students may not know the possibilities in their communities to support the students and families they are working with. It is crucial to gain all the information possible to relay the details to critical family and friends in the students’ lives. Parents and teachers often do not know where to start to get children with disabilities the support they need to move forward with the next steps towards success. This qualitative study examined the perspectives of 4 parents before and after receiving training and information related to transition planning, and local resources related to supported living, supported employment, and post-secondary education.
