Abstract
Problem Significance
Housing instability is on the rise due to the affordable housing crisis many California renters are facing. Depression and anxiety are among the top implications of this crisis in the state, severely impacting families and individuals alike. In the Bay Area, the housing crisis is exceptionally bad, contributing to serious mental illness.
Analysis and Objectives
Efforts attempted at addressing this crisis in the Bay Area have failed. The Social Housing Model may provide a better sense of direction to address the root of housing instability among low-income renters. The goal of the program is to increase awareness of the Social Housing Model.
Intervention (Solution) Proposal
A community readiness assessment and community awareness campaign will assess whether Oakland, CA is prepared to adopt the Social Housing Model. The awareness campaign will create awareness of the Social Housing Model once the readiness assessment is complete. Collaboration between participating organizations will lay a strong foundation for community readiness and adaption of the Social Housing Model.
Recommendations and Conclusions
It is important to determine the readiness of a community by implementing new policy approaches as they drastically impact people’s lives. A strong housing model with a community-centered approach, that encourages independence and fosters sustainable change, is essential.
