Abstract
During the last decade the interest or the citizens of California toward community recreation has increased noticeably. Much has been written concerning the importance of the elementary school in training children and youth for leisure, and of the actual participation and cooperation of schools with other community agencies concerned with the wholesome use of leisure. It is the purpose of the inquiry (1) to consider the philosophy of training for leisure, to establish a background and to support basic assumptions; (2) to indicate the extent to which California Elementary Schools do participate in community recreation; and (3) to show how the creative arts and physical education contribute to the overall education of the elementary child as well as to provide him with the skills and attitudes necessary to use his leisure wisely. The problem then is to investigate the literature and reports in this particular field and from them extract pertinent information concerning the relationship of the California elementary schools to the total recreation community.
