Abstract
Adequate processing of sensory stimuli leads to appropriate behavior responses from children. This ability to respond appropriately can affect children’s cognitive, self-regulatory, and social development. Sensory rich environments provide many opportunities to integrate sensory stimuli from multiple sensory systems. However, parents of typically developing children lack knowledge on sensory processing and its importance for proper development. The purpose of this project was to provide parents of young children with information on sensory processing and sensory experiences they can provide their children at home. This was accomplished through a workshop with Power Point slides and an accompanying handbook with discussion of sensory processing, the key benefits of sensory experiences, and a list of sensory activities for children in the home. A survey was given at the completion of the workshop to assess the effectiveness of the project. The survey results showed that many participants had a basic knowledge of why sensory experiences are important for children; however, most of the participants found the workshop very helpful, and all the participants will use the at-home sensory activities.
