Abstract
Students from low-income households attend four-year colleges at a significantly lower rate than their counterparts from high-income households (Pathways to College Network, 2004). It is imperative that the United States increases its college-going rates and college completion rates in order to remain a leader in the world’s economy (Fountain, Cosgrove & Laptalo, 2006). In this study, the researcher explored the influential role Breakthrough Sacramento (BSAC) had on its alumni’s aspirations to pursue higher education. In doing so, various program elements were evaluated. Sources of Data The researcher conducted a thorough review of the literature and used a customized web-based survey to collect data. The survey consisted of 30 questions and included a combination of open-ended, closed-ended, and questions on a Likert scale. The survey questions were informed by current research related to best practices of college access programs as well as BSAC programming. Conclusions Reached Findings from the study revealed that BSAC had a very influential role in its alumni’s aspirations to pursue higher education. Many participants noted that BSAC helped them recognize the importance of education, exposed them to different opportunities and provided college awareness and information. However, participants also noted that the middle school programming during the school year was not meeting the needs of the students and that more support should be given to high school students. One main recommendation of this study is that BSAC strengthen its school year program in middle school by focusing on students’ academic needs.
