Abstract
Ernest Hemingway’s public persona and perceived hyper-masculinity limits his utility in contemporary gender theory. I seek to prove that men and women of his fiction converge and dilate their suppositions of how genders behave and react in a heterosexist hierarchy. The novels and short stories of Ernest Hemingway and critical theories of Judith Butler. Despite enduring misconceptions in the fields of feminism and gender theory, Hemingway’s fiction does in fact depict a broad variety of gender performances.
