Abstract
This paper uses data from 30 provinces for the years 2000 to 2018, primarily sourced from the China Statistical Yearbook, to answer basic questions about the impact of environmental regulations on China’s economy and health. Using the fixed-effects regression model, I will show that pollution control investments have positive effects on economic performance and residents’ health. However, the results differ when the environment policy is a pollution tax. In this case, the coefficients are not statistically different from zero. Thus, I conclude that pollution control investments play an important role in affecting the economy and health, but pollution taxes do not. There are, however, differences in these general results within certain regions and provinces of China.
