Abstract
The disappearance of the arts from the elementary classroom is an increasing problem in today’s public school system. The increasing demand for higher test scores has put a strain on the public school classroom. This project was designed in an effort to provide classroom teachers with a tool to re-introduce arts instruction into California’s public schools. Present arts participation is superficial and often lacks meaningful connections to a student’s interests and experiences. This project provides an integrated approach to arts instruction through building on core academic subject knowledge. Sources of Data The author researched literature related to arts education as well as the benefits of participating in the arts. Research included the history of arts education in the United States, the current state of music education, No Child Left Behind and standardized testing, as well as why children need musical experiences. Brain research and the arts, multiple intelligence theory, higher level thinking, and cooperative learning were also researched and analyzed. Conclusions Reached Through the review of literature as well as the author’s experience as an elementary teacher, the author realizes the significance of the arts in schools in fostering the development of the whole child. A complete arts education atmosphere inspires children, parents, and teachers to become active learners. The arts promote building meaningful connections as well as encourage a positive classroom community.
