Abstract
Storytelling is a form of art and its benefits in the educational setting abound. They include: verbal, auditory, oral skills development, increased creativity, community building, increased attention span and comprehension, and empowerment of children. We live in a society where many things are fast, instant, and photo-finished. There is an abundance of graphic images and visual stimuli. It is difficult to pay attention anymore to slow and simple things in life, like the art of storytelling. It is time to slow down, to pay attention to details, to live and not just exist. Children must be given this opportunity as well. They need to be told stories, they need to imagine, to be creative, and to learn to think outside the box. Imagination and creativity are great skills for children to develop. Moreover, storytelling comes from many wonderful traditions and rituals all over the world, and has existed long before paper and pen were created. Wisdom, values, family traditions are handed down from generation to generation through this oral tradition. This project will inform readers about this wonderful, age- old tradition of folk art – its rituals, methods, and benefits.
