Abstract
This paper is an examination or the first five and a half years of prohibition in northern and central California. The study examines primarily the enforcement of Prohibition laws by state county and local officials. The author has attempted to use as much as possible the terminology of the time, to allow the actors to speak for themselves. "Slang" native to the time and region has been retained to give a flavor of the era. A glossary of terms appears in the appendix.
