Abstract
My project, Psalm 18: A Dramatic Adaptation, is an original music composition written for chamber orchestra. This is a narrated soundtrack with the text from Psalm 18, in its entirety, spoken over the dramatic musical backdrop provided by the orchestra. The sound rises and falls, moving with the text. What this means is tone, texture, harmony, dynamics, rhythm, and other musical aspects are dictated by, and are reliant upon, the major themes presented in the text of Psalm 18. In this analysis of my project, I discuss my process for how I chose Psalm 18 as the basis for this composition, how I map the musical tone to each subsequent textual theme, and walk through the entire piece section by section, focusing on specific technical details that define each given section on both small and larger scales.
