Abstract
Transracial adoptive (TRA) parents face unique challenges in raising a minority child to be culturally grounded, and develop a healthy sense of self. This exploratory, mixed methods pilot studied the training provided to TRA parents in Northern California. Twenty participants completed surveys distributed via mail or in person. Study results showed that all participants received training yet 55% still struggled with issues of identity development and 25% struggled with connecting their child to their culture of origin. Results also showed that TRA parents indicated they would like to see more supportive networks for TRA parents and children. This study, although limited to a small number of participants, does indicate a need for more research amongst TRA.
