Abstract
The goal of this project was to provide teachers with training to help them to better support a child in the classroom who has experienced abuse and neglect. Child abuse is a serious threat to children’s emotional and social well-being, and teachers are in a unique position to detect and report suspected abuse. Teachers are only required to receive brief training on identifying and reporting abuse and neglect in their role as mandated reporters, and many report they lack education on how to support a child who is a victim of abuse in their classroom. The purpose of this project was to develop and present an interactive workshop using evidence-based materials to promote knowledge and strategies for supporting a child, as well as expand teacher’s confidence and self-efficacy in detecting and reporting child abuse and neglect. The development of the materials included a needs assessment with current educators. After development, the workshop was piloted and evaluated. Recommendations for future improvements are included.
