Adolescents are at a higher risk of engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) than adults or children. NSSI is often used as a maladaptive coping strategy to alleviate emotional distress, and it is associated with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. This project aims to provide a free digital resource to help families with adolescents engaging in NSSI. The resource will provide information on NSSI, its warning signs, and protective factors. A literature review covers the prevalence, risk factors, protective factors, mental health stigma, COVID-19’s impact, and current resources related to NSSI. School psychologists can play a significant role in supporting the emotional well-being of students and providing resources to families on how to support their children best. Although COVID-19 has limited the research on the full social-emotional and behavioral changes among adolescents, this project provides a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on NSSI in adolescents.
