Abstract
The focus of this study is to discover the impact an adoption of a standardized curriculum in a basic writing course had on student success. I began my study in the Fall of 2017 by looking at a Northern California community college, which had adopted a basic writing curriculum. My focus was to look at whether or not the standardized curriculum was more or less successful than the non-standardized curriculum. I conducted my research through receiving data on student success rates from the school’s research lab, distributing a survey online, and through one-on-one interviews with faculty. Three significant findings emerged from the data: 1) the non-standardized curriculum was more successful based on the data from the school; 2) the faculty’s definition of student success varied from the school’s definition of success; and 3) the standardized curriculum is in a downward trend in regards to student success.
