Abstract
Sierra No. 3: America’s Movie Locomotive identifies the national significance of Sierra Steam Locomotive No. 3 and nominates it for the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed in 1891, Sierra No. 3 is eligible under Criterion C because it represents a rare locomotive class and is the best example of the 4-6-0 wagon-top with deep firebox type. SRR No. 3 is also eligible under Criterion A because of its association with Western Cinema and status as the oldest and most prolific movie star locomotive. No. 3 retains most integrity under Criterion C and maintains full integrity under Criterion A in all aspects. Sierra No. 3: America’s Movie Locomotive establishes the historic context of the Sierra Railway/Railroad, Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works, the 4-6-0 design, the Western Genre, and the Movie Star Locomotives. Sources utilized included railroad histories, manufacturer and technical catalogs, historic photographs, film, newspaper articles, and National Park Services documents.
