Abstract
This project included drafting a parent handbook called Sensory Motor Intervention in Family Settings to Support Children with Learning Difficulties. The handbook contains information on how sensory motor development relates to learning and provides assessment methods for parents to evaluate their child's motor development level. Based on such evaluation, parents can use activities within the handbook to support their child's learning and strengthen their motor development. To evaluate the helpfulness of the handbook, the researcher gathered qualitative data. Interviews of four qualified parents about the usefulness of the handbook were analyzed using open and focused coding methods. Three main themes focused on the helpfulness of the handbook in supporting children with learning difficulties emerged from these results. First, the handbook provided new and useful information in the topic area for parents of children with learning disabilities. Second, the handbook is understandable, but the levels of understanding depend on reader's prior knowledge and experiences in the area. Third, application of the handbook can be challenging in terms of correctly using the assessment tools and motivating a child to do support and strengthening activities. These results suggest that the handbook may need to be revised to adjust for different levels of prior knowledge and provide more scaffolding in using the assessment and treatment tools. Nonetheless, making the handbook available to the public would be beneficial for a larger audience of those in need.
