Abstract
This project is based on the literature surrounding transgender youth as an at-risk population, as well as on the importance of providing school-based supports to transgender students to promote positive mental health and school engagement. This project is intended to increase awareness for educators and school-based service providers around the hardships faced by transgender students at home, in the community, and at school through an educational in-service training for staff. The main objective of this training is to equip school staff with the knowledge and competency to provide ethically sound school-based supports to transgender students. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model is used as a framework for delivering supports. In addition, this in-service includes practical information for school psychologists to utilize, such as special education assessment and counseling considerations. Materials in this project comprise a PowerPoint presentation with presenter’s notes, a facilitation guide, practical online resources easily accessible to participants, interactive activities and case studies, and a post-presentation survey designed to gather participant feedback in order to improve future presentations.
