Abstract
This project was designed to bring awareness of social communication disorder to general education and special education teachers and to provide them with strategies when working with students diagnosed with the disorder. The professional development was divided into two parts. The first professional development session provided general education and special education teachers with background information on social communication disorder, which was a new diagnosis in the newest edition (fifth edition) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The second session suggested specific strategies for teachers to implement when working with students diagnosed with social communication disorder. With this new diagnosis of social communication disorder, the goal of this project was to provide educators with a foundation in knowing the characteristics of the disorder, what challenges students with the disorder may face, and what strategies can be implemented to support students with the disorder.
