Abstract

Anxiety Curriculum K-12 Mindfulness Adolescence Children
Anxiety has become a significant issue in the K-12 schools. During this period of life, students are faced with an extensive list of expectations: meeting the high standards of academic excellence, learning to be an independent individual, developing organizational skills and time management, completing homework and tasks, maintaining social interactions with teachers and peers, and mastering flexibility for changes and transitions. In addition, they might encounter different challenges in their lives that may include traumas, illness, lack of support, bullying, peer pressure, deficits of coping mechanisms and self-control, and low self-esteem and self-efficacy, which can lead to stress and anxiety. The purpose of this project is to educate teachers about the existing anxiety research, which highlights that practicing mindfulness can help students cope with anxiety. Mindfulness can assist children and teens in developing a nonjudging approach to their experiences, including understanding their feelings, emotions, and thoughts without positive or negative reflection. Mindfulness can positively affect student' psychological health, improve their self-esteem and self-control, and enhance coping skills. This project will provide educators with research-based mindfulness techniques they can incorporate into their daily routines. Daily mindfulness practice can promote student emotional and physical well-being and nurture their personal growth. By incorporating everyday mindfulness activities, teachers will help students develop coping strategies to enhance their self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-control. In addition, practicing mindfulness daily with youth will help them reduce symptoms of perceived stress, anxiety, and depression, improve classroom climate, eliminate unwanted behaviors, and promote successful academic performance throughout their students' educational journey.
