Abstract
There is a lack of visual resources in Chicano education that makes it impossible to explain the historical, cultural and political reality of Mexican people. Without these resources, the attempt to broaden the awareness of Chicanos continues to be limited. The purpose of this project is to develop a visual resource unit using art as a reflection of Mexican and Chicano history, culture and politics. It is the contention of the authors that what is needed in Chicano education are the processes of de-education and re-education for many Chicanos. We must institute ways of dispelling myths and learning truths. The re-education of Chicanos must include historical and cultural continuity . The selection of Jose Guadalupe Posada and Chicano artists as subjects in visual awareness units is only one of the subjects possible for use in creating awareness. Education is a means for dealing in truths. Continual change adds an updating and humanizing element to the educational process.
