Abstract
Statement of the Problem
The problem of students feeling disconnected is common at large high schools. As high schools continue to grow in size and diversity, it is too easy for students to become invisible or lost. Research shows that more and more students are feeling disconnected to school. Adopting a curriculum that addresses the issue of students feeling invisible or disconnected is essential at large high schools. Advisories help students do better in school and prepare students for their lives after high school.
Sources of Data
This project was accomplished by designing a survey and collecting evidence to show that an advisory program was needed at Bear Creek High School. Additionally, other middle and high school advisory programs' curriculum, specifically programs in nearby Elk Grove Unified School District and Chico Unified Scholl District, were researched and examined. After reviewing the advisory curriculum examples and Bear Creek High School's data information, the 9th grade advisory curriculum was
developed.
Conclusions Reached
Advisories offer more personalized attention for students in large high schools. Students feel connected to their schools, and as a result, attendance, test scores and graduation rates increase. However, in order for schools to see positive results, the creation of advisories, specifically the curriculum, needs to be well thought out, implemented slowly and reviewed annually.
