Abstract
Statement of Collaboration
Both researchers spent considerable effort on all parts of this thesis including the research and writing. Wendy Gomez wrote chapters 1 and 2. Susan Bailey wrote chapters 3 and 5. Chapters 4 and 6 were written jointly. The tables were created by Susan Bailey. The abstract, table of contents, and formatting were completed by Wendy Gomez. All parts of this thesis were edited and agreed upon by both researchers before completed.
Statement of Problem
Children with type 1 diabetes and their parents face challenges managing diabetes during school. Challenges in school management of diabetes persist despite laws to protect children with disabilities.
Sources of Data
A 46 question survey was completed by 240 parents of children with type 1 diabetes. The data identified challenges of managing diabetes at school and how these challenges affect the parent and child.
Conclusions Reached
School aged children with type 1 diabetes require assistance to manage their diabetes during school: 27% need help checking blood glucose; 43% need help calculating insulin doses; and 21% need help administrating insulin. Challenges include: untrained school personnel caring for children with diabetes and lack of504 plans to address accommodations. School nurse involvement correlates with increases in written health management plans and better glycemic control.
