Abstract
The adolescent sexting epidemic can be psychologically damaging and illegal. In many states, adolescent sexts are child pornography. Parents who give their adolescents cell phones require an education on this new and risky adolescent trend of sexting to prevent negative ramifications. The project contains a presentation component for parents designed to educate participants on sexting and why adolescents sext so that they can, in turn, educate and communicate with their children. Forty-one participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire about their awareness of sexting, their knowledge of their adolescent’s sexting activity, and about the value of the presentation. A blended questionnaire of qualitative and quantitative questions was created to collect data from participants. The results of this questionnaire generated the data for this project which were analyzed using frequency distributions. The data clearly indicated that most parents are unaware of potential adolescent participation or ramifications of the sexting trend, and more education on sexting is required. Overall, 90% of the respondents found the presentation useful, and 98% plan on communicating further with their adolescent about sexting as a result of the presentation.
