Abstract
Roundabouts have become popular because they are proven to be safer than other traditional types of intersection. National studies have shown that there is an observed overall 35% reduction in total crashes and 76% reduction in injury crashes when compared to other types of intersection. However, no safety and/or operational performance study has been conducted for the roundabouts in Sacramento County. This study evaluated the safety and operational performance of roundabouts in Sacramento County and compared the safety and operation analysis results to see whether there is any relationship between crash data and operational performance. It was found that roundabouts in Sacramento County had good safety and operational performance and the crash severity and crash type percentages were aligned with national studies. Furthermore, the study could not find a clear relationship between safety performance and operational performance.
