Abstract
The oppression experienced by LGBT individuals can create psychological stress and put them at risk for depression, anxiety, drug abuse, suicide, and other negative outcomes. When seeking mental health services, LGBT individuals are often treated by practitioners who are biased, misinformed, uneducated and/or untrained. A lack of knowledge exists regarding the extent, availability and accessibility of services offered by non-profit mental health agencies and programs targeted to meet the unique mental health needs of the LGBT community in Sacramento County. Data for this study was collected by using a resource inventory to establish existing services. The results of this study suggest there is a need to improve and expand existing mental health services for the LGBT community in Sacramento County.
