Abstract
Problem Significance: Diabetes is a national public health concern and a leading cause of death. Colusa County experiences a disproportionate burden of diabetes and is ranked the third highest county in California for diabetes prevalence.
Analysis and Objectives: Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption increases the risk for developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Cultural beliefs about T2D and perceived healthfulness of SSBs are predisposing factors, parental role modeling is a reinforcing factor, and beverage availability within the home environment is an enabling factor influencing SSB consumption. The intended audience for the intervention will be Hispanic adults with preschool-age children.
Intervention (Solution) Proposal: The proposed intervention includes a social marketing campaign and health education component addressing underlying beliefs related to T2D and SSBs along with changing community norms to consume water instead of SSBs.
Recommendations and Conclusions: An asset-based, collaborative approach inclusive of community partners and stakeholders is essential to the success of the proposed intervention.
