Abstract

Queer Transgender Exercise Physical Education Sports
This study is an exploratory secondary data analysis from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This project investigates the relationship between physical activity and suicidal ideation particularly among transgender youth. Participant responses to transgender identity, movement participation, and suicidal ideation were analyzed though chi-square tests. Analysis shows that transgender identity is an indicator as to whether or not youth participate in movement practices (p<.001). Among transgender youth, there is no statistical significance between movement and suicidal ideation, indicating that physical activity is not a protective factor for this group. An additional analysis controlled for race among trans and non-trans youth, with mixed findings. This study offers insight into the prevalence of movement practices on trans youth and the impact that physical activity may have on their suicidal ideation. Social work practice, research, and policy implications are discussed.
