Abstract
Large antenna arrays enable directional precoding for Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) systems and provide sufficient link budget to combat the high path-loss at these frequencies. Due to atmospheric conditions and hardware malfunction, outdoor mmWave antenna arrays are prone to blockages or complete failures. This results in a modified array geometry, distorted far-field radiation pattern, and system performance degradation. This projected proposes a remote array diagnosis algorithm for mmWave systems with large antenna arrays. Using array signal processing, the proposed algorithm detects abnormalities in the received far-field pattern at different angle of arrivals. These abnormalities are then compared to a look-up table to determine the set of faulty antennas.Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and show that fault detection can be obtained with only a few number of diagnostic measurements.
