Abstract
The goal of this study was to explore fifth and sixth grade math motivation. The three research goals were: (a) to assess math related motivation among fifth and sixth grade students, (b) to compare gender differences in motivation for mathematics in fifth and sixth grade and (c) to examine what academic and personal factors are associated with math motivation at the fifth-sixth grade levels. The study was conducted using surveys with 56 fifth and sixth grade students at two elementary schools from the San Juan Unified School District. Results showed no significant relationships between grade levels and math motivation. This study identified a significant relationship between gender, math anxiety and value of math. Finally, several academic and social factors were associated with students’ math motivation. Limitations and future implications are discussed.
