Abstract
Statement of Problem
Critical thinking and creativity are essential components of an effective education. The two skills are complimentary and elicit greater understanding of literature. Research over the past century has indicated a need for educators to become more attuned to using critical thinking and creativity in classrooms. In particular, inequities in advanced reading comprehension outcomes have been shown to occur throughout the United States. Teachers need to become aware of and address inequities in reading comprehension in order to ensure that all children reach their potential in literacy.
Sources of Data
Twelve fifth grade students from the researcher's classroom at Phoenix Elementary School in Folsom, California, participated in an action research study. Thirty days of classroom activities were analyzed. The design, instruction, and student completion of curricular materials and classroom activities were also analyzed.
Conclusions Reached
There were five main curriculum features that the research revealed to be crucial to advancing critical thinking and creativity in reading classrooms: (a) meta-cognitive skills, (b) graphic organizers, (c) brainstorming and outlining, (d) teacher-:led conferences, and (e) drawing. The main component in enhancing the five significant features was a cooperative learning environment wherein students' understanding was developed through peer collaboration. The entire project benefited from instructor oversight in the form of explicit instruction. Critical thinking and creativity work hand in hand to enhance understanding and elicit incredible works of art.
