Abstract
This thesis project examines the process of local historymaking focused on Florin, California, and investigates how public memory is shaped particularly through Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. This thesis analyzes how authority is conveyed in the telling of history, how impressions of authority are received, and how the memory of those who experienced historic events are imbued with a unique kind of authority. Images of America is one of the company’s numerous History Press series dedicated to the telling of a specific historical topic transmitted through archival images, captions, and text.
