Abstract
Master of Social Work (MSW) students participate in field placement as part of their educational program which may expose them to secondary traumatic stress (STS). Research has shown this population has a high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) that may increase their risk of re-traumatization, contributing to the development of STS. This study explored the relationship between ACE and STS among MSW students. A sample of 70 MSW students completed an online survey distributed by their field instructor. Study results showed that students reporting multiple ACE-like experiences had a higher frequency of STS symptoms. Future research is needed to identify and implement strategies in social work programs to mitigate the effect of STS.
