Abstract
Statement of the Problem: Research of available videos and films on the subject of listening shows a lack of available contemporary treatments that teachers, managers, counselors, trainers and others can use to aid them in persuading their specific audiences to reassess their listening skills, and then to work toward enhancing those skills in this important area. The video script is written for the general audience ages 12 and up, and is designed as a presentation of a fresh perspective on the subject, and as a prelude to further discussion in the context of a classroom, workshop, training seminar or counselling session.
General Nature of Topic: The project discusses the significance of listening, provides some definitions of listening, and explores some of the barriers that stop people from enhancing their listening skills. It then justifies the use of a video format for expression of the subject, and discusses the creative design behind the videoscript. Next is the script itself, followed by a discussion of aspects of changes in script design that might occur for two relatively distinct target audiences, and an overview of the pragmatics of production that need be addressed when considering video production of the script. The project concludes with three appendices--first, Guides to Successful Listening gleaned mainly from "popular" treatments of the subject; second, critiques of viewed videos and films on the subject; and third, a bibliography of other video materials available that relate to the subject of listening.
